Lavrov starts visit to N-Korea
The visit follows the signing of a defense agreement between the two countries in June 2024. Under the pact, North Korea deployed troops to support Russia in repelling a major Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk Region.
In talks with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui in the port city of Wonsan, Lavrov hailed the "unbreakable brotherhood" between the two nations. He specifically praised North Korean forces who, alongside Russian troops, fought to reclaim territory from what he called “Ukrainian Nazis” in Kursk, acknowledging the heavy casualties they sustained.
In August 2024, Ukrainian forces temporarily seized the city of Sudzha and nearby villages in a cross-border assault, which Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said was aimed at strengthening Kyiv’s position in any potential peace negotiations. Russian forces fully retook the area by April 2025.
Last month, Russian Security Council Secretary Sergey Shoigu announced that North Korea would send 1,000 soldiers specialized in mine clearance and 5,000 military engineers to help rebuild damaged infrastructure in the Kursk Region.
